A Global Digital Hub to Combat Human Trafficking

The Anti-Trafficking Response website, managed by the International Rescue Committee, is a global hub that raises awareness about human trafficking and provides educational resources and practical tools for practitioners to strengthen prevention, protection, and response efforts.

Understanding Human Trafficking

Every year, millions of lives are devastated by human trafficking,

a hidden, brutal industry built on exploitation and immense profits. According to the International Labour Organization, between 27.6 and 50 million people are trapped in forced labour worldwide, with many more in forced marriage or other forms of modern slavery (ILO, IOM). Criminal networks profit to the tune of US$236 billion annually just from forced labour and sexual exploitation (ILO).

While accurate data on this hidden crime is difficult to get,

women and girls make up around 61% of the detected victims. Children are increasingly victimized — about 38% of detected trafficking victims are under 18, with girls particularly overrepresented in younger age-groups. (UNODC)

These figures are not just statistics. Behind each number is a person — a child who should be in school, a young woman whose freedom is stolen, a family torn apart.

Besides, traffickers are no longer confined to dark alleyways or back rooms —

they are increasingly operating online, exploiting technology and even artificial intelligence to target, recruit, and control victims. Social media platforms, gaming forums, and encrypted messaging apps have become hunting grounds where traffickers manipulate trust and exploit vulnerabilities. AI-driven tools are also being misused to create deceptive ads, fake profiles, and even manipulated images that make exploitation harder to detect and easier to conceal.

Learn the realities of human trafficking —

from its online reach to its scale, victims, and profits — and turn awareness into action. By understanding the problem, we can demand accountability, protect the vulnerable, and help build a future free from exploitation.
